Echoes of Aincrad Developer Q&A Livestream Summary

成田真理 6/27/2026 5 min read

At the start, the team looked back on the May 9 special event and the long promotional anime Unanswered//butterfly. Although it is technically a promotional video, the developers said it was produced almost like a theatrical anime. They also noted that Rex and Emil received strong reactions from viewers and staff. For those who have not seen it yet, they suggested there may be another chance to watch it around the game’s release.

The theme song, Aimer’s “Live to Survive,” was also discussed. The team said the song was created to capture the feeling of struggling to survive in Aincrad while still moving forward.

Why Kirito Is Not the Protagonist

The developers explained that many previous SAO games were built around experiencing Kirito’s story. This time, however, the goal is different: the game asks what would happen if you were there, in that place and at that moment.

The theme is not becoming Kirito, but living through the death game as yourself, starting from the 1st Floor of Aincrad. The team wanted players to feel the tension after Kayaba’s announcement, and the pressure of surviving as an ordinary player in that world.

How This Differs From Previous SAO Games

The developers said players should think of this as a completely different kind of SAO game compared with titles such as Last Recollection. Previous games often focused on role-playing through Kirito’s saga, while Echoes of Aincrad focuses on the world of Aincrad itself and the player’s own experience within it. The action elements are also stronger this time.

Difficulty and Action Gameplay

The game includes four difficulty settings: Story, Normal, Hard, and Very Hard. On Story and Normal, players should be able to enjoy the game comfortably by leveling up, strengthening weapons, and adjusting their build, even if they are not good at parries or precise guards.

Very Hard, on the other hand, is designed to be challenging. The developers mentioned being defeated by bosses repeatedly during testing. That said, the goal is not to create unfair instant-death traps, but to make a mode where careful preparation, observation, and player skill can carry you through.

Replay Value and Playtime

A normal playthrough of the main story is expected to take around 30 hours. Including side quests, exploration, and deeper progression, the playtime can easily go beyond 50 hours depending on the player.

Some side quests can take 30 to 40 minutes each, and there are many of them. The fields also contain worldbuilding text and lore details, making exploration rewarding for players who enjoy reading into SAO’s setting.

Future Floors and DLC

The main game focuses on the 1st and 2nd Floors. The developers said they first want players to experience this content. If the direction of the game is well received and the title performs well, they would like to consider future content beyond the 2nd Floor.

There are also plans for expansion DLC. The DLC will be a new side story connected to the main game, allowing players to further enjoy the world of the 1st and 2nd Floors.

System Trailer Overview

The newly shown system trailer introduced avatar creation, mapping, combat, Partner AI, and character progression at the player’s base.

Players begin by entering a name and creating their avatar before setting out to conquer Aincrad. In the field, activating Safe Areas reveals the map for the current area, showing information such as treasure chests, gimmicks, and paths.

Combat revolves around managing stamina and SP. Attacking, dodging, and guarding consume stamina, while SP builds up as you damage enemies and is spent on Sword Skills. Healing Crystals can be used to recover HP, but their uses are limited, so consumables such as potions are also important.

Each Partner has different Support Skills and Combination Skills. Partner AI can be switched between Switch Mode and Free Mode. Switch Mode is useful against a single powerful enemy, while Free Mode works well when fighting multiple enemies or attacking one target together.

At the player’s base, the Chest Orb allows equipment changes and character growth management. Growth Points earned from leveling up can be allocated to attributes, and players should raise stats that match each weapon’s Ability Correction. The Item Seller allows players to buy or craft consumables, while the Smithy handles weapon enhancement, synthesis, and production. By combining weapon performance with EX-MOD effects, players can create builds suited to their own playstyle.

Release and Bonuses

Echoes of Aincrad is scheduled for release on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S on July 9, 2026 in Asia, with the Steam version following depending on region and platform timing.

Pre-ordering the digital version or purchasing an early physical copy grants the Prototype Elucidator Series weapon set. The developers said this bonus is quite strong in the early game and can help players progress more smoothly during the opening hours.

Premium editions include additional content such as the uncut version of Unanswered//butterfly on Blu-ray, a special discussion video, soundtrack, visual book, cloth poster, badges, and other goods. The Premium Edition will also ship in a special delivery box, though the team noted it is still just an outer shipping box and may arrive with labels or minor shipping wear.
